WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The City of Dallas has advised us that any of the functions at the Garden Café that allow you to BYOB are ILLEGAL! This includes poetry night, birthday and anniversary dinners, photography and art shows, neighborhood meetings, and the new popular pop up dinners that we have hosted.
For example, Sharon Hage of York Street, along with Janice Provost and Chad Houser of Parigi recently hosted a fundraiser for Café Momentum. (follow link here) Cafe Momentum
These types of functions are the HEART and SOUL of Garden Café. They will be gone if something isn't done. Many of you have enjoyed attending these types of gatherings and functions over the past 8 years. We want to continue the tradition but cannot without your help!
What happened?
We have been encouraged for years by residents of Junius Heights and Munger Place to serve wine with dinner. So, we filed an application for re-zoning and began contacting all of the various neighborhood groups. After several meetings an agreement was reached and documents were prepared that reflected that. They were then presented to the planning and zoning commission. That compromise was reached to address many neighborhood concerns. It was agreed that; the café would only serve beer and wine, would close at 10pm, would play no exterior amplified music, and several other restrictions.

the planning and zoning commissioner
for this area, Dr. Bill Peterson,
indicated that he was pleased
that the neighborhood and
the applicant could reach a
compromise and that it should
be presented at the next hearing.
However, prior to the hearing, some of the neighborhood representatives met with the city planners office. Apparently, during the course of that meeting the city advised the neighborhood that it could not enforce one of the provisions of the special use permit, which required us to only have a beer and wine license. The city agreed that it could enforce all of the restrictions except for the stipulation that we would only serve beer and wine. That caused some concern with some of the neighbors.
Several of them showed up at the City Plan Commission hearing and stated that they no longer felt bound to the compromise agreement, because of what the city told them about enforcement. Only a few people showed up to the hearing..it is difficult for most to take a whole afternoon off from work and attend one of these hearings at City Hall. During the hearing Commissioner Bill Peterson announced that he had received 17 emails in favor of the Garden Café's request and 1 opposed. These letters were from what is called the "notice" group that live within 500 feet of the café. However, the vote of the plan commission was 7 to 5 against the café. The matter now goes to the city council. The city council does not have to take the recommendation of the city plan commission, but it requires a 75% vote of the city council to approve the café's request. This is normally very difficult to attain, but is not impossible.
New Proposed Conditions and Developments
After the City Plan Commission's meeting and vote, we had another conference with the city attorney's office. They have now agreed to add additional language to the proposed special use permit to address some of the neighborhood concerns that the café may become a bar or tavern, which has never been our intent. These new conditions require food to be 50% of the gross revenue of the café. Most restaurants are only required to have 25% of the gross revenue as food. The 50% requirement, among several other restrictions, will ensure the café remains a restaurant, and never a bar or tavern, as feared.
Most importantly, we recently visited with Dr. Bill Peterson, the plan commissioner for this area who voted against our request. He said that if these new provisions had been in the ordinance originally proposed he would have voted in favor!
What Can You Do?
If you have a friend (or a lot of friends) who might be willing to support us, please forward this newsletter and ask them to please write Angela Hunt or their city council member, or the new mayor.
The city council hearing is on September 14th. So time is of the essence! You do not have to live in the city of Dallas to express your support for the café. Please send a courtesy copy of your letter to the Garden Café.
You may simply say: "We support the Garden Café's request for a beer and wine license with all of the restrictions proposed," along with any other comments you may want to include.

Underground Dinner September 2nd!!
Oooh yeah! Its about time to try a little something different! If your looking for an adventure and a party on Friday night we got it!! (Last week we had models and the dos xx's guy there)!! This week its gangsta rap and soul food!! Fo shizzle! Think about it! You arrive to our hidden location (lakewood area, address sent to you the day of) and you are greated by Pimps and Hoes throwing back Schlitz malt liquor and screwdrivers!! Its gonna be epic!! Oh yes Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne, and Rick Ross aka Teflon Don will be jammin' with us!! So smoke a fatty, pick up some gin and juice and come eat some soul food!! Here are the details!

Breakfast for Dinner!!
Hello my little Honey Badgers,
Our next Underground Dinner is gonna be funky - crazy - cool!!! I think the only genre that we have not covered yet with these dinners is Breakfast for Dinner!! I know it sounds crazy but as a child growing up in Louisiana my mother did this once a month and it was always my favorite meal!! (we will have milk and orange juice, believe DAT) The din din will be Saturday night (in a hidden location around Lakewood) August 27th. Arrival time will be 8pm and BYOB homies!! I suggest mimosas or straight up champagne for this dinner!! Light body red wines would work too. I like bourbon with my breakfast but I know I'm a crazy cajun! Dinner will be $60/person + gratuity and cash only. Upon arrival you will be greeted with a complimentary mimosa(mostly champagne with a little orange coloring) by Beautiful Models and The World's Most Interesting Man(he might have Dos XX in his back pocket and his bear hugs are with actual bears). Please send us your RSVP via email for this 6 course Breakfast event! (what's on the menu, whatcha cookin, just give us a hint) Whoa, be easy my little honey badger before I feed you Cobra and Larva again!!! Think about this: Slow Scrambled Truffle Eggs w/ Shaved Black Truffles, Hatch Chili and Pork Belly Pancakes w/ Sweet Scuppernong Compote, Southern Fried Chicken and Biscuits w/ Wild Turkey Honey Butter Gravy, Sauteed Spinach and Roasted Garlic Hash w/ Smoked Ham and Cream Scardello Cheese Grits, Hawaiian "Loco Moco" Seared Kobe Beef over Fried Rice with Poached Farm Egg and Veal Demi Glace, and Black Garlic Ice Cream Parfait... sign me up now! ( I'm eating every course)

Underground Thanksgiving Dinner on July 29th
Gobble, Gobble!!
I just heard that the NFL lockout is over and that makes me thinks about Thanksgiving Dinner!!! MmmmHmmm! Don't cha know that Thanksgiving Dinner in July is waaaay cooler than Thanksgiving in November!!! Duh Winning!! If you know me by now then you probably know that it wont be your normal plain Jane Turkey Day Din Din. I'm gonna twist it up new and traditional for everyone in our first family style dinner format!!!! I'm excited!! Details... Friday July 29th at 8pm we will have Thanksgiving Dinner, $70/person + gratuity(cash only) and BYOB(did someone say French Red Burgundy??)!! Please RSVP via email with the amount of people in your party and we will email you the address!!!

I have mad love for my homies Chef Matt Balke and Chef Jeff Harris!!! I am starting a boycott REDFORK campaign!!!
What what!!! Thanks to my boys over at Serious Pizza for feeding me this week!!! (I seriously live off Pizza and Chili Dogs) Ask Mike at Serious or Jackson at Cosmos they know!
The best meal I've had out in a long time was at NOSH the other night!!! Avner and Jon are kicking some serious ass at Wycliff and Oak Lawn with the help of Carrie Keep currently on Hells Kitchen!!! The caviar and foie gras dishes were amazing!!
We had a stellar weekend with 2 underground dinners (Friday and Sunday) and I got the honor of going out to Carley and Johnny Seale's(of The Gypsy Wagon) Lakehouse in Tyler, TX to cook for Carley and Geoff Taylor's(House of Blues) birthday party on Saturday!!! I cooked for 16ppl by my self(and pulled it off) but lucky to have Ariel Saldivar help me cleanup!! Thank you all for an amazing weekend!!
Last but not least I have to tell you that I am scared!! Soo many amazing people have died at 27 yrs old(Joplin, Hendix, Morrison, Cobain and now Winehouse) and I wanna make it through this whole deal and not become a member of this club. So I have started a......Keep DAT alive at 27 to open Twenty Seven Campaign.. please click the link and donate money to support ChefDAT in opening his first restaurant "Twenty Seven" in Dallas!
